Daniela Mercury

Daniela Mercury has become the most internationally recognized Brazilian artist today. With 12 albums under her belt, 4 DVDs of live performances and 11 international tours during a 20-year musical trajectory, Mercury remains on top of a world that has applauded the vigour and beauty of her shows. Her mission, to see the entire world dance to samba-reggae, is fuelled by an unequalled energy, and her legendary live performances have toured the world with explosion of light, colour, and percussion.

The Balé Mulato Tour brings, for the first time to the UK, the stunning visuals and polyrhythmic interplay of Brazilian culture as featured in the critically-acclaimed live release, Bale Mulato Ao Vivo, which earned her a 2007 Latin GRAMMY®. The concert Bale Mulato thrives in baroque-inspired imagery and aesthetics, with mesmerizing choreography and songs with an incendiary percussive foundation at their core.

The balé (ballet) is indeed mulato and carnivalesque: a mixture of beats accentuating Afro-Brazilian pride is celebrated in a show that draws from samba reggae, rock, frevo (a hybrid of martial polka and African), galope eletrônico (the electronic version of a northeastern rhythm that imitates the gallop of a horse), and romantic balladry. Props such as masks from Bahian Carnavals of yore add a visual punch to the show and the carousing eventually takes an electronic twist with the infusion of contemporary beats. It is impossible to resist partaking in the dance of Balé Mulato.

A native of Salvador Bahia, Mercury regularly tours Europe, North America and Latin America and has performed with the likes of Sir Paul McCartney, the legendary Ray Charles, Wyclef Jean, Juan Luis Guerra, Mercedes Sosa, Alejandro Sanz , Cirque de Soleil and Gilberto Gil amongst many other greats.

Mercury, as sole owner of her records and publishing catalogue, chooses her international partnerships specifically to promote and enhance her presence at large with the same passion exuded in her work. As such, her career has blossomed organically both in Brazil and abroad.

Clearly a Brazilian cultural Ambassador, Daniela Mercury is also firmly committed to the social role she plays in the global community. An ambassador for UNICEF, UNESCO, and various non-profit social organizations, she will launch her own foundation, Instituto Cultural Sol da Liberdade in 2008.

Don’t miss this one of a kind opportunity to witness – and dance – with a Brazilian legend.
