Youssou N'Dour 2009

indigO2 to host world music luminary Youssou N'Dour

Genre hopping Senegalese troubadour comes to town

Youssou N’Dour, the renowned singer, songwriter and composer and one of the most celebrated African musicians in history, is appearing at indigO2 on 25th July. This show is the first chance in over a year to catch this gifted artist perform in the UK.

Youssou's mix of traditional Senegalese music, with eclectic influences ranging from Cuban samba to hip-hop, jazz and soul, has won him an international fan base of millions.  In addition to his music Youssou N’Dour is the subject of the critically acclaimed film ‘I Bring What I Love’ directed by Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi, winner of Best Documentary at the 2003 Tribeca Film Festival.

The film follows Youssou N’Dour, a devout Sufi Muslim through the release of his 2005 album ‘Egypt’, a deeply personal and religions album promoting a tolerant face of Islam. Almost instantly, his fellow Senegalese rejected the album, denounced his actions as blasphemous and put N’Dour at the center of a huge controversy. This film follows him – filming in Africa, America and Europe - facing the challenges and winning over peoples minds and onions through his message.

In the early 1970s N’Dour was performing regularly with the Star Band, Dakar's most popular group. He then went on to conquer the rest of the world, collaborating with the likes of Wyclef Jean, Paul Simon, Bruce Springsteen, Peter Gabriel and Tracy Chapman.  In 1994 his single with Neneh Cherry ‘7 Seconds’ gave him a massive hit single which still receives radio play today. The New York Times have described his voice as an “arresting tenor, a supple weapon deployed with prophetic authority”. He recently performed at two of the largest live events in history - the 2005 Live8 concerts in the UK and France.

Don’t miss one of the world’s most exciting and original artists at London’s hottest new intimate music venue, indigO2.
