National TV Awards - The Biggest Battle In Television Gets Underway

The long-list nominations for the 16th annual National Television Awards (NTAs) see TV's biggest stars go head-to-head in the most highly charged contest to date.

The UK's No.1 awards show, returning to the spectacular surroundings of The O2 arena for a second year running, will be broadcast live on ITV1 in January, with Dermot O'Leary - himself a nominee in Entertainment Presenter - resuming hosting duties.

Produced by Indigo Television for ITV, the National Television Awards is the only TV awards ceremony where viewers choose all the winners in a massive nationwide poll and, as such, the trophies are highly-coveted prizes.

This year's long-list pitches TV's most popular stars against one another, and two exciting new categories ramp up the tension and add an extra competitive edge. Highlights of the long-list, a colossal clash of the TV titans, include:

  • Daybreak and The One Show going head-to-head in the NEW Topical Magazine Programme category - this sees Daybreak hosts Adrian Chiles and Christine Bleakley in direct competition with their One Show replacements Jason Manford and Alex Jones, but who will emerge triumphant to be declared doyennes of daytime? Introduced to cover the growing number of studio-based magazines, this category also includes former NTA winners This Morning and Loose Women.
  • Will What Katie Did Next thrash Peter Andre: The Next Chapter in the NEW Digital Choice Award? Both the subjects of their own fly-on-the-wall documentaries in this category which reflects the vastly growing programme choice offered to viewers on digital. This list also houses break out international hits including Glee and House, and Sky One's reality hit Got To Dance as well as home-grown hits such as The Inbetweeners and Being Human.
  • Two new male stars who burst onto our screens making an impact in the title roles of hit series go head to head in Drama Performance... Dr Who's Matt Smith and Sherlock's Benedict Cumberbatch lead the field in an impressive and glittering array of acting talent.
  • Both Dr Who and Sherlock also make the Drama category. But Sherlock is not the only detective here. The police are out in force in this category... Wallander, Lewis, Law and Order UK, Ashes to Ashes, Foyle's War, Midsomer Murders, New Tricks, The Mentalist etc all show viewers can't get enough of 'who dunnit' TV.
  • Having emerged victorious last year, X Factor will be vying to repeat their triumphant win in the Most PopularTalent Show category - but will Strictly Come Dancing - a previous winner in this category take the title? Simon Cowell gives himself a second chance of honours here with Britain's Got Talent. All face strong competition from fellow contenders, such as Dancing on Ice and Don't Stop Believing.
  • It's a special year for two of our most popular drama serials with Coronation Street and EastEnders celebrating their 50th and 25th anniversaries respectively. But the festivities will be put on one side as both shows go all out to persuade the public to vote for them in Serial Drama. But of course both Hollyoaks and Emmerdale have their own vast army of fans and it could be their year.
  • The Most Popular Entertainment category sees chat show giants Jonathan Ross and Piers Morgan fight it out with their respective evening shows Friday Night With Jonathan Ross and Piers Morgan's Life Stories. But can either overshadow reigning champions Ant and Dec, who feature with their primetime series Ant and Dec's Push The Button
