Whoever remembers American R&B group New Edition will remember hits like 'Candy Girl', 'Jealous Girl', 'Cool It Now' and 'Can You Stand The Rain'. Well, the three lead vocals behind those are back!
Back and better than ever to deliver that classic soul, R&B and hip hop rhythm that previously saw them achieve amazing platinum success. Bobby Brown, Johnny Gill and Ralph Tresvant have all teamed up to form The Heads of State and will be performing at indigO2 on 28th October.
1980's Boy band New Edition made and achieved phenomenal music success and history bringing to light a new kind of music known as new jack swing, which was a fusio of R&B and hip-hop. The group pioneered the way for similar groups such as Boyz II Men and while the notorious Bobby Brown left the group in the late eighties to pursue a glittering solo career, the group continued to evolve with the welcoming of new member Johnny Gill taking their music to a new height of maturity and sound. With a new member in tow, the group continued to produce chart-topping hits with the release of their 1989 album 'Heartbreak' and achieved idol status.
The longevity of ASCAP award winning New Edition and their legacy also lies in the members' solo successes. Bobby Brown undeniably achieved groundbreaking success as a solo artist riding the way of the New Jack Swing movement and released his solo album 'King Of The Stage' but it was his next album 'Don't Be Cruel' that gained him super stardom and spawned chart-toppers such as 'My Prerogative' which enabled him to crossover to mainstream pop audiences. 'Don't Be Cruel' sold seven million copies, saw him win a Grammy and made him a tabloid regular in conjunction with his private life.
Co-lead singer of New Edition Ralph Tresvant also achieved a name in his own right. While initially cautious about launching his own solo career, Tresvant went on to record the single 'Sensitivity' which gained him a number one R&B hit and reached #4 in the Billboard Hot 100 therefore going gold. On the back of this success, Tresvant's self-titled debut album was released in 1990 and went platinum.
Last member to join New Edition Johnny Gill had been working on solo projects throughout his time in the group. His collaboration with Stacy Lattislaw on 'Perfect Combination' had scored him his first top ten in 1984. The release of Gill's self-titled solo album in 1990 also reached successful heights selling over one million copies and was the first album to have been produced by the two top producing teams of that time, L.A Reid and Babyface and Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.
With all this wealth of experience and success, the forming of The Heads of State has been much hailed and anticipated. The group will not only be performing New Edition classics, but also a combination of their own huge hits. The audiences will be able to enjoy the sultry and romantic voices of these phenomenal and popular three men who will take back in time to an era of raw, mature soul, making this 'one off' experience a night to remember and cherish.
In the words of Bobby Brown himself 'You got the three leads, so you can't mess with that... we're going to flood the industry.'
