What To Do When You Turn Up Early To The O2

We know how it is – whether it’s your Dad, your other half or just you – there’s always someone in the party who has one eye on their watch at least 12 hours before a big event.

These epic timekeepers are useful (and usually the reason that any household keeps functioning without falling into total disrepair), but sometimes there are repercussions to leaving an unnecessary amount of ‘buffer time’ when travelling.

Of course, the nightmarish situation is to arrive at the airport four hours before a flight, just to find out that it’s six hours delayed (prepare to discover just how much you hate the Candy Crush theme tune). Something we see time and time again at The O2 is excited groups arriving with far too much time to spare before a big show. Which is why we’ve decided to fill all the space around the arena with as many restaurants, shops and bars as physically possible to make sure boredom is pretty much impossible.

Here’s what we suggest you do if you have a few hours to kill…

HUNGRY?

Each restaurant at The O2 is carefully chosen so that we have a wide range of cuisines, price-points and atmospheres.

If you’re with your mates…

You’ll want something reasonably priced, cheerful and fun. Grab a burrito on the go from our Burrito bar, or delve into some artfully wrapped sushi at Wasabi. Or, you could make like @clarebearhh, who was recently in this precise situation: ‘#Nandos chicken-ing it up before the @mcbusted show tonight at the O2! Bring it on.’

If you’re with the family…

Burgers are the ultimate people pleaser, so they work very well for families. Luckily, The O2 has over 10 restaurants that serve up exquisite burgers, and each puts its own spin on the seemingly never-ending supply of toppings. From a packed and satisfying Five Guys classic, to a more exotic Persian lamb and halloumi speciality burger at GBK – there’s something for everyone.

If you’re on a date…

Dates are a perfect opportunity to splash out, so we’d suggest sharing a smouldering Argentinian steak experience at Gaucho, or some crispy Thai squid at the atmospheric Busaba Eathai.

THIRSTY?

A sure-fire way to give your pre-event buzz a little boost is to partake in a bevvy or two. Whether you’re a pint-downer or a sophisticated cocktail sipper, there’s plenty to choose from.

If you’re with mates…

There are plenty of places to get silly with your pals beforehand, whether it’s sharing a few cocktails at All Bar One, or getting a few cheeky pints down you at the Stella Artois bar. @shadowsteph has the right idea, tweeting: ‘We're here at the O2 - a few beers in the sun before the show @takethat @GaryBarlow @HowardDonald @OfficialMarkO.’

If you’re with the family…

The kids will love our Mixology Bar - it's a magical wonderland of exciting mixed flavours and vintage favourites. Have they ever wanted to try fizzy rhubarb and custard? Or wondered what drinkable salted caramel tasted like? Or fancied a PROPER cherry cola? Well this is the place for them. (And there's the sneaky bit of addable booze for Mum and Dad too!)

If you’re on a date…

This one is easy – having a glass of bubbly at the Lanson Champagne Bar is one of the classiest and most romantic things you could do on a date, except for maybe whisking your lucky other half off to Paris.

NOT HUNGRY OR THIRSTY, BUT STILL IN NEED OF SOMETHING TO DO?

It’s rare that we don’t find ourselves slightly peckish, but sometimes it happens – usually after we’ve just had a meal. But if you end up in a huge venue with hours to kill and no appetite, it can potentially spell hours of boredom. Unless you’re at The O2, that is!

If you’re with mates…

The perfect way to educate your friendship group to the wonders of The King himself, the Elvis exhibition is the largest retrospective ever seen in Europe. Our favourite feature has to be the huge collection of gold memorabilia, from suits to phones! This is a selfie-takers paradise.

If you’re with the family…

The Nissan Innovation Station is the perfect pre-show activity for families of all ages – thanks to the host of activities for children and adults alike. Become a car test driver, experience a Gran Turismo racing pod, and take a selfie with Usain Bolt thanks to our special photobooth.

If you’re on a date…

There’s something about skylines that gets the blood pumping, which makes the Up At The O2 experience perfect for a pre-show adrenaline rush. Scale the exterior of our iconic London landmark and enjoy the vistas of one of the most celebrated cities in the world.
